RAY-BAN WAYFARER

- ING - "Ray Banner" was created 1952 by Raymond Stegeman and has since then become the best-selling and imitated style around the world. Originally it was created for pilots, but their successful  commercial hit big so a model for women was created. The avant-garde design, going from the traditional metal frames to plastic was very innovative at that time and that fitted the aesthetic revolution of the 60's. Personalities such as James Dean, Roy Orbison, Andy Warhol, John Lennon, John F. Kennedy, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Elvis Costello, Morrissey, The Ramones, Blondie's Debbie Harry, U2... give charisma and made the brand ​​famous, but Bob Dylan made it a pop culture icon. And Marilyn Monroe was the one who elevated the Wayfarer to a "cult object." - ESP - "Barrera contra rayos" (ray banner) fue creado en 1952 por Raymond Stegeman y desde entonces se ha convertido en el estilo más vendido e imitado en todo el mundo. Originalmente fueron creadas para los pilotos de aviación, pero su éxito comercial fue tal que se creó un modelo para mujeres. HIP FLASK / PETACA

- ING - The Hip Flask is a pocket-sized bottle used to carry alcoholic beverages. It usually has a curved shape to better fit the hip or thigh of the wearer. The modern bottles are made of stainless steel and can be covered with leather or plastic, but formerly they were made of tin, silver or crystal. The members of the high social class began to use it in the 18th century and it was at that time when it started to appear in its current form, but in fact the hip flask existed long before that... In the 20's the popularity increased considerably in USA due to the prohibition of alcohol that was in that moment ... The design of the bottle had the ability to easily hide the illegal possession to the authorities. Today, in many places in USA, it's illegal to carry hip flask due to the law prohibiting the possession of unsealed containers of alcohol in the street.

- ESP - La Petaca (Hip Flasks) es una botella de bolsillo que se usa para llevar bebidas alcohólicas. Suele tener una forma curvada para adaptarse mejor a la cadera o el muslo del portador. Los frascos modernos están hechos de acero inoxidable y pueden estar cubiertos de cuero o plástico, pero antiguamente se hacían de estaño, plata ó cristal. Los miembros de la nobleza comenzaron a hacer uso de ella en el siglo XVIII y fue allí cuando empezó a aparecer de forma reconocida, aunque en realidad ya existían desde mucho antes... En la decada de los 20's fue cuando su popularidad aumentó considerablemente en USA, debido a la prohibición de alcohol que hubo en ese momento... el diseño del frasco tenia la capacidad de ocultar facilmente la posesión ilegal ante las autoridades. Aun, en muchos lugares de USA, es ilegal llevar petacas debido a leyes que impiden la posesión de contenedores de alcohol no sellados en la via publica.

HERMAN MUNSTER

- ING - Hernan Munster is the main character of the series "The Munsters" and he was based on the Frankenstein monster in the novel by Mary Shelley. The series was first aired in the U.S. in the 70's and showed the life of a family of monsters. Hernan was built (not born) in 1865 in a laboratory in Germany by Dr. Victor Frankenstein. He is a man of 2.25 meters tall, green skin, flat head, with 2 metal tubes out of his neck (a pioneer in what today is called piercing), scar on his forehead caused by a snowstorm, wearing black and works in a funeral home, lives with his wife Lily Dracula Munster, his son Eddie Munster (mini werewolf), his granpa Sam Dracula, his niece Marilyn (beautiful blonde) and her pet, a dragon named Spot. Without doubt, it's one of my favorite series.

- ESP - Hernan Munster es el protagonista de la serie "The Munsters" y su personaje fue basado en el monstruo de Frankenstein sacado de la novela escrita por Mary Shelley. La serie fue emitida por primera vez en EEUU en los 70's y mostraba la vida hogareña de una familia de monstruos. Hernan fue construido (no nacido) en 1865 en un laboratorio de Alemania por el Dr. Víctor Frankenstein. Es un hombre de 2,25 metros de altura, de color verde, cabeza plana, con 2 tubos de metal fuera de su cuello (pionero en lo que hoy se denomina piercing), cicatriz en la frente producida por una tormenta de nieve, viste de negro y trabaja en una funeraria; vive con su esposa Lily Dracula Munster, su hijo Eddie Munster (mini hombre lobo), su suegro Sam Dracula, su sobrina política Marilyn (hermosa rubia) y su mascota, un dragón llamado Spot. Sin duda, una de mis series favoritas.

BEACH CRUISER

- ING - In the early 30's the bikes were a luxury item, designed for sport or recreation. Following the Great Depression, they seek to create a vehicle that was resistant and economical. In 1933, Schwinn was the first company to develop a concept bike, using two-inch tires steel wheels with a comprehensive picture and sound double crossbar. Novel but heavy. In 1934 he released a new slimmer model, which is even used today. They became very popular during the 30 and 40, but in the 50's people declined for lighter models imported from EU. The word "Beach Cruiser" arose year 76 when the owner of a recycled bicycle shop in Newport Beach, California, used it to promote cycling on the beach. The Cruisers became the vehicle of choice for surfers and people that frequently visit the beach. The large wheels allowed it to go through the sand very easily. The concept of comfort, style and low cost compared with other models, they returned to the big market. The adults saw it as a comfortable bike that reminded them of their youth and young people appreciate the retro style, simplicity and price. There for came the cruiser lifestyle.

- ESP - A principios de los años 30's las bicicletas eran un artículo de lujo, destinadas al deporte o la recreación. A raíz de la Gran Depresión, se busco crear un vehículo que fuera resistente y económico. En 1933, Schwinn fue la primera compañía en desarrollar un concepto de bici utilizando neumáticos de dos pulgadas en llantas de acero con un cuadro amplio y sólido de travesaño doble. Novedosas pero pesadas. En 1934 se lanzó un nuevo modelo más estilizado, que es el que aun hoy en día se usa. Se hicieron muy populares durante los años 30 y 40, pero en los 50's la gente se declino por modelos más ligeros importados desde E.U. El término Beach Cruiser surgió en el 76 cuando el dueño de una tienda de bicicletas recicladas en Newport Beach, California, lo usó para promocionar el uso de la bicicleta en la playa. Las cruisers se convirtieron en el vehículo preferido de surfistas y asiduos a la playa. Las ruedas anchas permitían ir por la arena con facilidad. El concepto de comodidad, estilo y el bajo coste comparado con otros modelos las devolvió al mercado masivo. Los adultos la vieron como una bicicleta más cómoda que les recordaba su juventud y los jóvenes apreciaron el estilo retro, su simplicidad y su precio. Surgió el estilo de vida cruiser.

POPEYE THE SAILOR & HIS DARK SIDE

- ING - Popeye the Sailor: famous fictional hero that appears in comic strips and animated films and was created by Elzie Segar in 1928. His name comes from the English pop-eye which literally means eye bulging, and refers to his blind eye (common term among the sailors). Some say that he is the ancestor of the Superheroes. 

During the '20s and '30s, when Popeye was created, the word "spinach" was the code used to refer to marijuana (you can hear "The Spinach Song" recorded in '38 by Julia Lee And Her Boyfriends, which makes clear reference to the subject). From here, some similarities begin to emerge... It is known that the sailors were the first to introduce this grass in the American culture, a product of his travels. The anti-marijuana propaganda of the time stated that the grass endowed super-strength or high strength. In some chapters, the sailor taking care of their crop of spinach, which reminds of a cannabis crop and in another he appear with a package of "pura espinaca boliviana" (just as it said on the wrapper). - ESP - Popeye el Marino: famoso héroe de ficción que aparece en cómics y películas de animación. Fue creado por Elzie Segar en 1928. Su nombre proviene del Inglés pop-eye que literalmente significa ojo saltón, y se refiere a su ojo ciego (término común entre los marineros). Algunos dicen que es el antepasado de los Superhéroes.

Durante los años '20 y '30, cuando Popeye fue creado, la palabra "espinaca" era un código utilizado para referirse a la marihuana (se puede escuchar "The Spinach Song", grabado en el ‘38 por Julia Lee And Her Boyfriends, donde se hace clara referencia al tema). A partir de aquí, algunas similitudes comienzan a surgir... Se sabe que los marineros fueron los primeros en introducir esta hierba en la cultura americana, producto de sus viajes. La propaganda anti-marihuana de la época declaró que la hierva dotaba de super-fuerza y de alta resistencia a quienes la consumían. En algunos capítulos, se ve al marinero cuidando de su cultivo de espinacas del mismo modo como si fuera un cultivo de cannabis; en otro aparece con un paquete de "pura espinaca boliviana" (tal cual como aparece en el envoltorio). En los años ’60, Popeye ingería espinaca a traves de su pipa. Antiguamente, antes de la prohibición, la marihuana era utilizada como alimento de aves y Popeye tenía un perro llamado "Birdseed" (semillas para aves). En el ‘54, Popeye explica que Hércules fue su antepasado y en una escena se le ve esnifando ajo y comiendo espinacas (alusión al consumo de cocaína y marihuana?).Te guste o no, son similitudes... La verdad es que el personaje se convirtió en una de las más famosas del mundo y uno de mis favoritos.

EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS

In Mexico there is a pre-Hispanic celebration honoring the dead, the famous "Day of the Dead". This celebration has been practiced for more than three thousand years.

- ESP - La muerte es un símbolo fuerte que siempre ha causado admiración, asombro, respeto e incertidumbre. Las culturas nativas mesoamericanas consideraban la muerte como el paso a seguir a una nueva vida. Los cráneos fueron usados ​​más comúnmente, en nombre de la muerte y la mortalidad, aunque esto depende del contexto cultural. Para algunas sociedades antiguas representan la "vida". En México existe una celebración prehispánica en honor a los muertos, el famoso "Día de los Muertos". Dicha celebración se ha practicado durante más de tres mil años.

SKULL RINGS

- ING - The old rings date from ancient Egypt where used as decorative jewelry or to sign documents. - Esp - Los anillos más antiguos datan del antiguo Egipto, donde se utilizaron como joyas decorativas o para firmar documentos.
